Introduction for new Kīanō Brotherhood Members

Kia Ora my dear brother!

My name is Jake Kīanō Skinner and I’m dedicated to creating a space for men to develop emotionally, mentally, and to build resilience.

I want to introduce you to a space which is held to our collective values.

We explore through the lens of Te Ao Māori and also the Jungian Archetypal natures of masculinity (KING, WARRIOR, MAGICIAN, LOVER).

Our circles go for 2 hours and start with an honouring of the space and then moves into a Gratitude sharing circle. We then focus on a particular Archetypal nature that is in all of us and explore through Breath-work, Primal Movement, Eye Gazing and vocal drills to get us somatically into our bodies. Evening always flows in the direction of what is needed. ALL Men who adhere to our collective values are welcome to this space, to get to know yourself deeply and also learn that all the medicine you require is from within.

You will be assigned a buddy from the group who has been attending regularly to help you settle into the rhythm of this work. We have a zero tolerance policy on intoxication; it becomes dangerous for those present, especially with this work. We are here to protect a safe space for all brothers to come to a stronger place within themselves. intoxicants prevent connection, we promote connection.

*Men who cannot adhere to the Collective Values will have one opportunity to own the slip up and reintegrate into the group after a 2 week rest from the space. Then if you continue we will respectfully ask you to cease payments and no longer show up to the brotherhood.

**If we smell any intoxicants including Alcohol and Cannabis you will be asked to leave immediately.

In the Kīanō Brotherhood we are aiming to create a space that enables us to release the things that are holding us back or creating stagnation in our relationships with our friends and whānau. For this work to be done we need to deeply protect the space itself so we feel safe enough to meet these different parts of us. You will not find the facilitator telling you what to do or actively fix you but he will get you to find your own truth that’s within you. Because this is your own unique journey and you have the faculties within to shift things in this process. To help protect the space we have some ground rules and collective intentions for this style of Men’s work

Collective Intention

To create a non-judgemental space where we can focus on positive modelling of masculinity. We are doing this for our future generations

Ground Rules

  1. Zero tolerance for intoxicants – The smell of alcohol or cannabis will result in being asked to leave.

  2. Confidentiality – NOTHING leaves the room, no gossip no using names (Share concepts no identification of the person sharing)

  3. Ownership rather than projection – Always bring your sharing back to yourself blaming others is not taking responsibility for your situation.

  4. Listen deeply – Observe when your mind wanders during a brother’s share, perhaps you’re thinking about what to share? Practise the art of sharing in the moment so you can remain present. This is the perfect place to practise it!

  5. No offering of gifts to brothers in circle or facilitator – If gifts are brought forward for the benefit of all brothers and the space itself this will be handled on a case by case basis.

  6. No fixing others – No offering of advice we believe the person sharing knows what to do they merely need to find that. Don’t get in the way of the process.

  7. Honour the brother sharing – Remain neutral and prevent over the top reactions to shares. This is super important during shares.

  8. Show up for yourself and your brothers – Sometimes we can feel overwhelmed with our own feelings and feel that we can’t add to the space. It’s important to know you are sovereign to the decision of showing up. You make your own decisions. I put forward that this space is a WE space and not a ME space. Even when you’re going through challenging times just your presence can really help another brother move through their challenges.
